REBORNE is a European project entitled "Regenerating Bone Defects using New biomedical Engineering approaches".

Bone grafting is widely used in hospitals to repair injured, aged or diseased skeletal tissue. In Europe, about one million patients encounter a surgical bone reconstruction annually and the numbers are increasing due to ageing population.

The main objective of REBORNE is to develop new biomaterials that stimulates bone tissue formation either in combination with adult stem cells or not, for regenerating bone defects in orthopaedic and maxillofacial surgery.

The objectives will be to demonstrate that biomaterials and cells are safe and at least equivalent to standard treatments using biological grafts without their drawbacks. Minimal invasive surgery using injectable biomaterials with intrinsic osteogenic property will be preferred in order to trigger bone healing.

In the course of this 5 years project, five clinical trials will be conducted in orthopaedic and maxillary surgery using advanced biomaterials and stem cells.
